"Promote or Perish - The Greatest Myth of Publishing"
by Hugh Rosen

Allyn Evans: Moderator
Carolyn Howard-Johnson: Speaker
Marilyn Peake: Speaker
Kathe Gogolewski: Guest Speaker

This is the second in a series of 30 audio CD’s that are published
by Double Dragon Publishing. They can also be heard by
downloading them. The moderator throughout the series is Allyn
Evans
http://www.queenpower.com. She is the founder of Queen
Power. The instructors of the entire series are Carolyn Howard-
Johnson http://carolynhowardjohnson.com ,  Marilyn Peake
http:
//www.marilynpeake.com, Joyce Faulkner
http://www.joycefaulkner.com, and Kathe Gogolewski
http://www.tri-studio.com.

Happily, the same informal and friendly atmosphere generated in
the first of the series in this course have flowed over into the
second, as I suspect will be true for the balance of presentations.
The organization of the CD begins with a few biographical
comments on each participant, followed by the inviting voices of
each speaker. The final segment of the course is one of a
sparkling discussion by the speakers and moderator, each one
fueling the other with her scintillating questions and remarks. The
result is that the listener becomes privy to highly useful information
for charting his or her course in attempting to promote one’s own
book. This comes in the form of switching one’s mind-set about
what to expect, an abundance of websites to pursue, and sound
action plans to execute.

I would say that the transcendent lesson of this part of the entire
series is that regardless of what venue your book has been or will
be published through, you must not rely on your publisher to
promote it (unless you possess some such name as Stephen King
or Margaret Atwood). Whether you have a traditional publisher,
turn to a print-on-demand publisher, or self-publish, the burden,
and fun, of promoting your book will fall upon you, the author.

Carolyn begins the speaker’s portion by presenting her critical,
“Twelve Myths of the Publishing World,” extrapolated from her
acclaimed book, The Frugal Promoter: How to Do What Your
Publisher Won’t. (She even adds two more to further debunk the
myths of publishing). It is precisely here that the listener must
undergo a paradigm shift in thinking about the publishing world.
The myths are so embedded in our minds that authors will have to
struggle to rid themselves of these fallacies and replace them with
more reality-based thinking that will open the door to greater
success in understanding the publishing business and promoting
their books. Also, as the title of her book suggests, the process
will be a money-saver for book promoting need not require great
expenditures.

Marilyn shares with us what she regards as three important
productive actions: 1. Obtain good online reviews; 2. Put up a
website and keep it up-to-date; 3. Join groups with fellow writers
for networking, but also engage in online chat groups with other
readers. However, avoid pushing your book too aggressively on
these chat-lines, doing so only with subtlety and tact. She also
suggests publishing a free newsletter and inviting authors to
contribute articles, as well as reviewing books besides one’s own.
She shares her personal experiences at book promoting and
provides many websites to follow up.

Kathe, the guest speaker, urges the frugal book promoter to
submit her work online, send out news media releases, and seek
additional ways to make your website readily available. She
stresses the importance of making book festival booths generative
of multiple offshoots so as to create more excitement about it
rather than to settle for a static booth of inert books, a practice
that all of the participants were enthused about and concurred
with.

Allyn, the moderator, emphasized how the audio series itself was
a collaboration that  brought together people with common
interests, yet which imparted diversity of genres and thoughts.
This is something that all the participants readily endorse. Great
stress is placed on the value of cross promotion, the concept of
authors reciprocally supporting one another in promoting their
books.

All of the participants worked well together and approached their
tasks with enthusiasm, motivation, and inspiration, which will
spark much of the same in the listener.

Another CD to be released soon in this series will be on
“Podcasting,” presented by Joyce Faulkner.
